Course Description
This beginning to intermediate mural painting course combines a global scholarly overview of historical and contemporary murals with the practical development of beginning to intermediate skills needed to complete mural projects. Primary focus will be placed on the application of color and design principles and on developing the drawing and painting skills required for the production of a successful mural, from conception to execution. Students will collaborate on beginning to intermediate level mural design and production. Recommended Prep: ART V11A and ART V13A and ART V15A and ART V16A. Field trips may be required. Painting, sculpture, and architecture from prehistoric times to Post-Modernism will be explored with particular emphasis on the art object as a form of cultural and social expression. Works of art will be considered through the study of theory, concepts and terminology, themes, design principles, media, and techniques. Field trips may be required. This foundation course provides an introduction to the concepts, applications, and historical references related to three-dimensional design and spatial composition, including the study of elements and organizing principles of design as they apply to three-dimensional space and form. Emphasis will be placed on the use of the elements of line, plane, mass, and volume, the exploration of materials, and the use of tools. As an aide to creative expression, visual vocabulary will also be developed through lecture presentations and the use of appropriate materials for non-representational, three-dimensional studio projects.
