What is the Bachelor's Degree Program?

By law, California Community Colleges can now offer bachelor's degree programs in academic areas with a regional labor market need. In fact, the Board of Governors may approve up to 30 new programs across our state per year.

Is a bachelor's degree earned at a community college the same as the degree earned at a California State University, University of California, or private university?

The California State University and University of California are accredited by WASC. Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura colleges are accredited by ACCJC/WASC and our bachelor's degree programs fall within this accreditation. Graduate programs will accept the community colleges' bachelor degrees in the same way other WASC-accredited undergraduate programs are accepted. 

Is there a guaranteed admissions process for current students?

The bachelor's degree programs require a separate admissions application from students currently enrolled in an Associate degree program. Currently, there is no guaranteed admissions process, but the bachelor's degree programs build upon the existing Associate degree programs by adding additional upper-division coursework. Current students interested in applying for a bachelor's degree program are advised to update their Student Education Plans with a college counselor to ensure prerequisite courses and general education certification requirements are met. 

I'm interested in a community college bachelor degree, but I'm majoring in something else. What should I do?

Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura colleges have many academic programs that will help you prepare for transfer to bachelor's programs offered by the community colleges, California State Universities, University of California, or private universities. Students are encouraged to visit the Transfer Center to learn more about bachelor degree programs in your majors and areas of interest. 

I'm interested in taking some of the bachelor's degree courses but am not in the bachelor's degree program. Can I still enroll?

Students must be admitted to the bachelor's degree program to enroll in upper-division courses. Restrictions on enrollment are in place by program and course.  

I already hold a bachelor's degree, can I still apply and complete a second bachelor's degree? 

Yes. Students who hold a bachelor's degree from a WASC-accredited college or university can minimally waive the general education certification. Students are still required to meet prerequisite requirements.

What is the cost of a bachelor's degree at Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura colleges?

Students will continue to benefit from low-cost tuition ($46 per unit) for their first two years of study. Upon admission to the bachelor's degree program upper-division courses, tuition will increase to a total of $130 per unit. Students may apply for financial aid and scholarships each year.

When should I apply for financial aid?

The community colleges are currently in the process of being approved for upper-division financial aid by the Federal Department of Education.

Students who plan to apply to the bachelor's degree program should complete the FAFSA form for that year. Learn more on the FAFSA, including what you can do to prepare to apply on the FAFSA Website.

Can I use FAFSA if I already have a bachelor's degree? 

Yes, you may qualify for federal, state, and institutional financial aid until you have met all requirements for your first major. After that, only courses required for your second major can be considered for federal loans and work-study.

What financial aid is available for if I already have a bachelor's degree?

If you are a graduate pursuing a second bachelor's degree, you are considered a second-degree student. If you have completed all coursework required for an undergraduate degree and are eligible to graduate, you would also be classified as a second-degree student when applying for future aid.

Second-degree students are eligible for federal loans, work-study programs, scholarships, state aid, and private loan options. Loan eligibility is based on what you have borrowed as an undergraduate student, so please reference the Loan Amount Limit chart for limitations on your aid in the third-year and beyond.  

Please note that once you have earned a bachelor’s degree or your first professional degree, or you’ve used up all 12 semesters of your eligibility, you are no longer eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant.
