This is an introductory drawing experience stressing graphic representation of objects through a variety of media and techniques. The fundamentals of pictorial composition, including principles, elements, and practices of drawing, are particularly emphasized in the exploration of a wide range of subject matter. Perceptually based drawing, observational skills, technical abilities, and creative responses to material and subject matter will also be developed. Field trips may be required. The course includes discussions of the development of styles, techniques of producing art, major figures in art history, and the relationship of art and society, with a particular emphasis on the art object as a form of cultural and social expression. This course provides intermediate instruction in drawing the human figure from the live model. Emphasis will be on theory and practice in the uses of linear and tonal form. Exercises in structure, proportion, foreshortening, and composition, with an introduction to exaggeration and alteration of form will be assigned. Field trips may be required.
