Robert Hott, Maintenance Worker/Warehouse Operator/District Courier

Describe your position

I have three distinct areas that I am responsible for, which make for a lot of variety and autonomy, but that also means having to be flexible with my schedule. In a nutshell, I deliver all interdistrict mail and financial documents between the three campuses and the District Administrative Center (DAC); I’m responsible for shipping, receiving, inventory control and managing the District’s archives from the various departments within the DAC and do general maintenance of the DAC building to make sure we comply with annual state and local building requirements. There are times I have a time-sensitive delivery after hours or an emergency repair on a weekend, but in the end, I really enjoy what I do.

How long have you worked for the District?

In March 2022, I celebrated 23 years working for the District office. Terry Cobos, director of general services, hired me shortly after the District office moved to the Camarillo Airport. I’ve always been very appreciative of Terry for giving me the opportunity to work for VCCCD. She is the hardest working and most supportive supervisor I have ever worked for, and the District is fortunate to have someone so knowledgeable and dedicated to help run their day-to-day operations. I’ve formed many great relationships through the years, and I look forward to continuing those relationships when I retire.

I was born and raised in Ventura County (58 years), and I feel blessed to live in such a beautiful and diverse area.

Are you a VCCCD alum? If yes, which college?

I am a Ventura College alum. I graduated from VC in 1987 with a degree in liberal arts and went on to graduate from Cal State Northridge, receiving my bachelor’s degree in business administration and real estate.

I have many great memories of attending classes at Ventura College, and I had many amazing instructors. They were always very supportive, which really helped me with my transition to CSUN.

Flashback: I vividly remember watching Cedric Ceballos and the VC Pirate basketball team win the state championship my final year. The energy, athleticism and work ethic of that championship team was phenomenal, and it was exciting to watch them win the title.

When you’re not working, what do you enjoy doing?

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my daughter, Amelia. Whether it is whale watching or watching a scary movie, just sharing time with her and seeing her grow is rewarding. She is in Rancho Campana High School’s engineering program, so it has been fun sharing with her many of the woodworking and mechanical skills that I learned from my father.

I also enjoy riding motorcycles (street and dirt) and have toured California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona and Utah, all while camping out. Zion National Park is my all-time favorite destination. I’ve hiked many of the trails in Zion, and I find Zion’s Observation Point the most rewarding. I never get tired of the view.

What do you find rewarding about your job or career?

What I find most rewarding about my position is being able to support others. There are so many hardworking folks around the District that if I can help make their day a little easier, then life is good.

Do you do any volunteer work? If so, what?

I was the flag football coach and a Science Night presenter at my daughter’s school for several years. I also used to volunteer my time supporting the Special Olympics. Now, I just like helping others by performing random acts of kindness.

Two words to describe yourself:

Considerate and funny

Bonus Question: What’s your favorite board or video game?

My favorite board game is probably chess. I was taught at a young age, and I enjoy the strategy it requires.
