Name: Nubia Lopez-Villegas
Position: Human Resources Technician II – Confidential
What does that entail?
The job entails HR onboarding of new full-time and part-time faculty, as well as all classified employees. I conduct orientations and collect required documents as required by both federal and state laws, including the California Education Code, to ensure that all of our employees are in compliance. I annually send management and full-time faculty contracts. In addition, I manage leaves of absences or medical leaves.
I also assess our workflow and lead a team of HR technicians and a student worker. As part of the workflow, we send non-contract offers of employment for all part-time or extra hourly work. This entails about 3,500 offers per fall and spring semesters. The team and I maintain the personnel files and process them so that they are paid on payday.
How long have you worked for the district?
I will be celebrating 5 years this August. I am so excited to have been here all this time.
Were you a student at one of the district’s colleges and if so which one? What was your major and your degree?
I was not a student at any of our VCCCD colleges, but my education did start at Long Beach City College. I then transferred to Colorado State University in August 2001. In May 2004, I graduated cum laude with a degree in business administration with a concentration in organizational management.
That same year, I also attained my Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification. I continue to attend conferences and workshops in the area to stay abreast of changes in the world of human resources. Most recently, I was in the first cohort of the Leadership Academy for VCCCD.
Are you from the area and if not where are you from?
I came to California as a 2-year-old toddler from Mexico. I lived my youth in Lynwood, California, and moved for college to Fort Collins, Colorado. I moved back to Ventura County for a new career opportunity a few years before joining VCCCD. I still call Colorado my home.
Share something personal about yourself: (ex: pets, hobbies, what are you currently watching/listening to and why you enjoy it)
My biggest pride is my son, Cruise, who loves to run for the Camarillo Cosmos. He’s been running since he was 5 years old. I am often on the sidelines cheering him on during the spring season. In the fall he is on the Las Colinas Middle School Cross Country team.
Aside from that, I love reading books. I enjoy books by Dan Brown, Lisa Gardner, Stephen King and John Grisham, among others. Currently, I am reading The White Devil by Justin Evans. I also enjoy reading books about leadership, coaching and career strategies, the kind of books that support the backbone of my coaching and development skills. Such books include Leadership Dojo, First Break All the Rules, The First 90 Days, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and Emotional Intelligence 2.0, among other great titles.
I also love to bake and cook while I am listening to music, mostly in Spanish (yes, I am fully bilingual and I can read Portuguese). I enjoy rock en Español, cumbias, mariachi and rancheras. In English, I enjoy The Cure, U2, Erasure, Gun’s n Roses, Poison, etc. I pretty much like a variety depending on my mood.
What do you find rewarding about your job or career?
The best part about my career in human resources has been all of the wonderfully diverse people that I have met over the years, from executives to day laborers–people with great minds willing to learn and grow. I find all the wonderful experiences I have shared with them to be rewarding, and I find it rewarding how I was able to impact their lives, career or future. I also enjoy observing how things work and finding ways to make them better.
Two words to describe yourself:
Analytic and strategic.
