A Message from Oxnard College’s President Regarding the DACA Ruling

Good afternoon, 
I share your joy and relief in the recent US Supreme Court decision that provides a reprieve for our DACA students. Of course, DACA students make our campus a stronger and more vibrant place for each of us and we are glad to have their voices protected for the time being. The court’s reprieve is not absolute, so we must all continue to advocate for a long-term pathway of legal recognition, security, and citizenship for our students. Fortunately, our California Community College chancellor, Eloy Oakley, is preparing to lead our system to do just that. 

President John F. Kennedy reminded us, in his book A Nation of Immigrants, that this nation was founded by immigrants, and immigrants continue to contribute enormously to our economic progress. And the famous words of Emma Lazarus still greet visitors to the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore: send these, the homeless, tempest tossed. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

While we rightly feel relieved today, there remains more work to do. DACA-eligible students are welcome to apply for the program for the time being, and additional communications will be coming out from our Dream Resource Center in the days and weeks ahead. Please consider that team a resource:

Comparto su alegría y alivio en la reciente decisión de la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos que proporciona un aplazamiento para nuestros estudiantes de DACA. Por supuesto, los estudiantes de DACA hacen de nuestro campus un lugar más fuerte y vibrante para cada uno de nosotros y estamos contentos de tener sus voces protegidas por el momento. El aplazamiento de la corte no es absoluto, por lo que todos debemos continuar abogando por una vía a largo plazo de reconocimiento legal, seguridad y ciudadanía para nuestros estudiantes.
