As Chancellor of the Ventura County Community College District, I have the privilege of witnessing firsthand how Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura colleges shape the workforce, support students, and adapt to local needs. The Community Colleges of Ventura County are not just part of the community—we are the community, driving opportunity, innovation, and resilience. Our mission extends beyond education—we are an essential partner in regional progress, providing accessible, life-changing opportunities for all.  At a time when higher education is increasingly out of reach for many, community colleges remain a beacon of hope, ensuring that learning is not a privilege but a right.

Community colleges serve as gateways to opportunity for students from all backgrounds. The Community Colleges of Ventura County are committed to keeping education flexible, affordable, and accessible. As community colleges, our students may attend any one of our three colleges, allowing them to choose courses and programs that best align with their goals—whether that means earning an associate degree, transferring to a four-year university, or acquiring new career skills through a certificate program.

Accessibility is particularly crucial for working adults balancing family and job responsibilities. Through online and evening classes, certificate programs, and support services such as tutoring and counseling, we ensure that education remains within reach for all.

Yet, community colleges do more than award degrees. They serve as engines of economic mobility, giving individuals the chance to build better lives for themselves and their families. This commitment is personal to me. As a veteran who followed a nontraditional path to higher education, I understand the importance of second chances and the power of education to transform lives. Our colleges provide that same hope and opportunity to veterans, adult learners, and anyone striving for a better future.

Strong partnerships with local businesses, TK-12 schools, and nonprofits help ensure that our programs align with workforce needs. For example, our collaboration with the Isabella Project, led by the Ventura Community Foundation, strengthens opportunities for the newest members of our community. This initiative, in partnership with Ventura College’s Child Development Program, supports new and existing childcare providers, reinforcing a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Similarly, our work with the Economic Development Collaborative highlights our commitment to building talent pipelines that drive inclusive regional growth. By aligning our programs with in-demand skills, we prepare our graduates to thrive in today’s evolving workforce.

Now more than ever, we must champion the role of community colleges in shaping the future. Education should not be a privilege reserved for a few—it must be an open door for all who seek it.  By embracing partnerships, expanding access, and committing to lifelong learning, the Community Colleges of Ventura County are not just preparing students for jobs—we are shaping a future of innovation, resilience, and opportunity for our entire community.

The path forward is clear: We must continue to invest in community colleges, support their mission, and recognize their role as the foundation of an equitable and thriving society. The future of our workforce, our economy, and our communities depend on it.
