FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Colleagues, Students and Members of the Community,
This month we celebrate Black History Month by honoring historical figures in American history and by celebrating the achievements and success of all African Americans. This month is an opportunity to express our gratitude and acknowledge the importance and presence of African American colleagues, faculty, staff and students here at the Ventura County Community College District. Their hard work and dedication offers a unique perspective that contributes to the function of the district and the objectives of Moorpark College, Oxnard College and Ventura College and, ultimately, students’ success.
Initially established in 1926, as “Negro History Week,” Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) set out to bring awareness to the significant contributions of African Americans in American history. One of the main focuses of the week was to help educational institutions determine how to center curriculum on Black history. In 1976, President Gerald Ford acknowledged Woodson for his efforts and observed February as Black History Month. In 1986, Congress passed public law 99-244 which designated February 1986 as “National Black (Afro-American) History Month” (Library of Congress 2017).
African American culture is and has been a cornerstone of American culture throughout history. The languages, schools of thought, art, fashion, literature, and scientific advancements along with innovations and movements influence us all. It is a privilege to reside in a society and within a community rich in contributions from African American culture and traditions.
All of us in the VCCCD family continue to strive and cherish the diversity that each individual brings to our District. Let us Join together in celebrating and honoring African American History Month, a time to recognize cultures and traditions that helped shape our American culture.
Sincerely,
Bernie Luskin
