About
I was born and raised in Austin, Tx, the youngest of three girls. My parents were a Pastor (father from Chicago, IL) & science teacher (mother from Boston, MA). I was blessed to spend a substantial amount of my childhood on campus at The University of Texas, Austin (my father earned his Doctorate and was campus pastor there for 25 years). Between growing up on campus and spending all my time with two parents who were teachers or running around the hill country of Texas, it is little surprise that I pursued a career in science & academia.
I received my B.A. in Biology from UT. I briefly pursued a career in pharmaceutical research, until I hit a glass ceiling due to a need for an advanced degree. I returned to school and received my M.S. in Biology from Texas State University and discovered Ecology. My PhD was earned from UCLA in Biology, specializing in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. My research concerns rearing and studying endangered lepidopterans and it is my absolute joy to release captive reared endangered butterflies to the wild multiple times each year from my lab.
If you join me working with my butterflies, you may work your way up to helping with the report and garnering a spot on the author list! Look at all the wonderful MC students who have earned a spot in previous reports below. MC students learning how to work in a captive rearing laboratory!
I am also the founding advisor for the ESA SEEDS Chapter at Moorpark College. Come join us if you are interested in ecological investigations, outreach and volunteer opportunities.
I am a single mother and understand the curveballs & strains that life can apply and the impact that can have on pursuing an education. I try to develop my courses with "slack" and "grace" while holding you to a high standard. I will encourage you to learn to use your most valuable tool, your brain.
